Need the help of an experienced MegaSquirt person in Sydney

Post by HondaT1 »

Hi Everyone,

In the next couple of months I will be doing a Megasquirt install on a Honda City Turbo that will be tuned to run on E85.

The Honda City Turbo was fuel injected and turbocharged from the factory and runs a Honda CVCC head. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CVCC The CVCC heads use a pre-ignition chamber that is used to fire the main cylinder charge. All 4 pre-ignition chambers are fueled from 1 central fuel injector? I understand this head design helped Honda with meeting US pollution requirements back in the late seventies without the need for a catalytic converter.

I already have a complete MegaSquirt-II with PCB3 and a I am wanting to go distributor-less and use a Ford EDIS 4 Module for the timing. Yet to purchase the distributor-less parts.

I do not expect anyone to have set this up on a CVCC type head before, but I would like some help and advice from anyone in Australia who has previous installation experience with this sort of set up and could give me a hand when the time arrives.

I do have access to a workshop in Regents Park with a dyno when the time comes for tuning.

Would anyone like to assist me?

Hi Mate,

I have never had anything to do with Honda CVCC Heads, but just did a quick google on them. Looks like you have 4 normal injectors and one extra one feeding the pre chamber. To set this up you could run the 4 main injectors to one injector channel and the pre chamber one to the second channel. You can then set the megasquirt up so it has a VE table for each injector channel (normally used in V engines for tuning the banks seperatly). Not sure if the standard firmware will do this or if you will need to use the MS2extra firmware. I normally just use the extra firmware.

The ignition system will just be pretty normal I would think. Just read the EDIS section of the manual. Or you could use the extra firmware and add an extra ignition driver and just drive some wasted spark coils directly from the megasquirt and not need the EDIS module. You would still need to add a crank trigger though. Have a look at the MS2extra manuals.

http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/
Setting the injectors up on the two channels may be similar to a rotary setup or it could be the staged injection settings with the staged section always on, by setting the stage point less than idle rpms.

The MS2-Extra code will allow you to control 4 ignition coils http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/MS2 ... htm#3coils
you could pick up the ignitors to fire the coil from a wreckers. I think the Subarus have a good Bosch 4-channel unit.

You will have to add a Cam/crank sensor or convert to a CAS with missing tooth wheel so the ECU knows where the engine is in its 720degree(4-stroke) cycle.

And if you do go to a crank angle sensor the Hall-effect input circuit will not respond fast enough, you will need to use the VR-circuit input. Just check that the op-amp [U7] is not the LM2904, it will be problematic. Use a MC34072.
